Only Lovers Left Alive
Jim Jarmusch / DE, GB, FR, GR, US, CY, 2013 / 123 min.
Vampires Adam and Eve (Tilda Swinton) have been together for centuries, however their mutual trust, love and future are all at stake when modern humans disappoint them. An unexpected, contemporary vampire film from the always idiosyncratic Jarmusch.

Adam is deeply disappointed by modern humans and leads a reclusive life as a composer and musician in a studio full of vintage instruments. The love of his life, Eve, travels from the other end of the world to support him and he perks up, no end. However, the vampire couple’s centuries-long love affair is sorely tested by the modern world as the 21st century does not condone biting random strangers’ necks.
Pre-film
Before Only Lovers Left Alive, you will see the Dutch short film Interlude by Joost van Veen (2005, 2’), in which fish appear to swim through highly contrasting black-and-white film layers. Tilda Swinton hand-picked a short film, either from her rich oeuvre or from Eye’s collection, to precede all feature films.

Why in Eye
Ten years earlier, Jim Jarmusch gave me a copy of Mark Twain’s The Diary of Adam and Eve. This is our response to it: a love story for the ages and beyond, poet vampires in Detroit and Tangiers. All shot at night, naturally.
