In his fevered chiaroscuro portrait, Jarman sketches the life of Baroque painter Caravaggio, surrounded by male lovers, prostitutes and the criminal underclass of early seventeenth-century Rome. This opulent, stunning film brings together Jarman’s major themes: the perilous position of the artist, homosexual love and the hypocrisy of the church authorities.
