Flodder
Dick Maas / NL, 1986 / 109 min.
Dick Maas’ rough and ready comedy about an antisocial family in a villa development attracted some two million Dutch viewers and led to two sequels and a television series. Nelly Frijda’s portrayal of the cigar-chewing mater familias Ma Flodder became an archetype.

Upon its release, the so-called serious film press derided Flodder as a ‘demented laughter machine with tits and ass that produces vacuous chortling of its own accord’ (Het Parool [Dutch broadsheet]). Its director Dick Maas couldn’t care less as his comic book-like satire of an antisocial family installed in a villa development by a well-meaning social worker was heading to well over two million tickets sold and huge video rental profits.
