The Fire Within: Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft
Werner Herzog / GB, FR, CH, 2022 / 84 min.
Herzog as the soulmate of a French couple who travelled the world to record the magic of volcanoes i.e. the earth’s secrets. Herzog discovered the footage these fire-obsessed lovers left behind.

Like a moth to a flame, Werner Herzog seems drawn to the sinister beauty of volcanoes. For La Soufrière (1977) he travelled to a volcano on Guadeloupe, which – according to scientists – is about to erupt. In Antarctica he filmed Mount Erebus’ crater. For Into the Inferno (2016) he climbed active volcanoes, among other things, in North Korea.
