Lektionen in Finsternis
Werner Herzog / DEUZE, 1992 / 52 min.
Having suffered defeat in the First Gulf War, Iraqi soldiers set the oilfields of Kuwait ablaze. Werner Herzog filmed the apocalyptic fires that darkened the heavens, calling the result a ‘poetic science-fiction film’. Documentary on the nightmarish destruction unleashed by humans.
A week before the fires were extinguished in the last oilfield, Werner Herzog and a small crew set off for Kuwait, where Sadam Hussein’s troops were surrendering in droves to the allies. On 27 February 1991, Sadam signed a cease-fire.
