Idioterne
Lars von Trier / DK, ES, SE, FR, NL, IT, 1998 / 117 min.
Von Trier as a full-blown provocateur satirising the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie. A group of people act like they have issues to provoke the bourgeoisie and the audience. Selected by Janis Rafa as it illustrates the humanity’s wild nature.
Eye has dedicated an exhibition to the work of Janis Rafa which centres on the relationship between humanity and animals. This explains her choice of Idioterne (The Idiots), of which she said: " "A film I can never forget! The Idiots speaks strongly about social conventions: how should we act in a civilized western world? The film questions the rules of behaviour we created for ourselves: about human relations, about bodies, about respect, about behaviour in public space. What happens to human connections outside these parameters? What happens if we break free from these conventions and overcome taboos that exclude animal behaviour?
"The cinematography – with the saliva, feeding and sexuality – reminds me of how disconnected we are form other, nonhuman, forms of life. The Idiots makes statements in such a successful way that I cannot think of a better way!"

Eye Filmmuseum presents a solo exhibition by artist and filmmaker Janis Rafa. Spoken language rarely features in her evocative films and video installations; she focuses instead on the silent presence of non-humans, allowing them to become the leading force within her poetic compositions. Her narratives emphasise animalistic instincts, untamed behaviours and inabilities to coexist, alongside human fears, expectations and failure.
