Korte films Dick Maas 1969-1980
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dick Maas shot short films which already clearly reveal his style and his love of the – humorously employed – macabre as in Historia Morbi, Picknick and Adelbert.

Programme
Behind the Bottom (1969, 6')
Amusing collage of brief sketches and animations filmed on Super8 Dick Maas during his secondary school’s project week on ‘sexuality and eroticism’. There was to be no nudity or sex was allowed: Maas sought out illusion and filmed using stop-motion animation solely using a boy and a girl’s clothes. The film was well received by parents, teachers and pupils and this reinforced his desire to, in his own words: ‘Become the Netherlands’ best film director’.
Historia Morbi (1975, 22')
A macabre fairy tale about a murderous father (a sinister Cor van Rijn) and his sly son who lure unsuspecting travellers to their remote farm.
Picknick (1977, 6')
Black comedy of a man envisioning a very disturbing picnic to celebrate his silver wedding anniversary with his cranky, blind wife, and in which Maas manages to maintain tension throughout using minimal means.
Adelbert (Dick Maas, 1977, 32')
Satirical film about a broke artist who undertakes a failed suicide attempt with his lover. This was Dick Maas’ graduation work at the Nederlandse Filmacademie [Netherlands Film Academy]. Featuring Gees Linnebank, Ansje Beentjes, Cor van Rijn as an off-license owner, Mimi Kok as a volatile landlady and Alex van Warmerdam as her pretty stupid son.
Onder de maat (1980, 6')
Two men fishing are disturbed by the screams of a drowning woman crying for help. She proves to be a Salvation Army member. Will the men save her?
