Korte films Dick Maas 1980-1981
In the early 1980s, Dick Maas shot short films which clearly revealed his style and love of unexpected twists –humorously employed – as is the case in Idylle and Overval.

Programme

Bonbon (1980, 5')
An ample woman and her spouse prepare for a party. The woman is stuffed into a corset after considerable effort. While her husband drives the car round to the front, she decides to secretly have one last bonbon.

Idylle (1980, 10')
A woman parks her car under a block of flats on the Bijlmer high-rise estate and is subsequently harassed by a man. He follows her to the lift... After watching Maas' short film, made before he broke through with De lift, Golden Earring asked him to direct the video for their songs Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles.

Overval (1980, 5')
Whilst out jogging, a white man bumps into a black man. He accuses the latter of stealing his wallet, but is that really the case?

Rigor mortis (Dick Maas, 1981, 63')
Dick Maas’ first feature film about the tragicomic developments surrounding a man who has been buried alive for 124 days whilst trying to break the world record. The supremely Dutch scene plays out in the garden of the disused polder bar De Rustende Jager. “I didn’t think he would take it so literally,” says Leen Jongewaard. TV reporter Rijk de Gooijer introduces the aspiring champion with the words: “He is currently beneath us”.

In 2026, it will be forty years since the popular comedy Flodder shook up the film landscape. That same year, Dick Maas celebrates his 75th birthday — the perfect occasion for a look back at the work of the Dutch “king of genre,” who managed to draw millions of Dutch viewers to the cinema.
