Les glaneurs et la glaneuse
Agnès Varda / FR, 2000 / 82 min.
A magnificent portrait of French gleaners, amongst whom Agnès Varda herself. She filmed in rural and coastal parts of France with a handheld camera, impulsively and playfully.

Gleaners were people who picked up fallen (ears of grain) after the harvest was over. Nouvelle vague veteran Agnès Varda follows a few for the wonderful Les glaneurs et la glaneuse. Varda films loosely and impulsively without a script or pre-formed plan. She loves coincidence and regularly becomes sidetracked on her journey across France. Varda’s documentary is super playful and full of self-deprecation. She airily reveals that gleaning is a crucial mental activity: she collects images to prevent forgetfulness, making her the ‘glaneur’ of the title.
