Mur murs
Agnès Varda / FR, US, 1980 / 81 min.
The colourful murals found all over Los Angeles provided Agnès Varda, a refined observer, with a brilliant means with which to examine the city’s social, racial and economic tensions.

Nouvelle Vague pioneer Agnès Varda shot this refined documentary about the fiery, colourful murals that decorate Los Angeles in 1979: Afro-futurist views, fantastic historical parades, visionary scenes from the Day of the Dead. Mur murs reveals the multifaceted community behind this public art. Who paints these murals? Who pays for them? Who looks at them? Together with Varda we discover how this city, cinema’s capital, reveals itself and its inhabitants by means of these whispering walls.
In 2013, a 2K restoration of this documentary was undertaken with the support of the Film Foundation, the Annenberg Foundation and the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art (LACMA).
