A young drifter (Sandrine Bonnaire) is found frozen to death in a culvert. Was it a natural death? Flashbacks illuminate the final months of her life and the wide range of people she encounters in one of Agnès Varda's most lauded feature films.
Mona has left her elite office job for life as a drifter. The people she meets including a rich academic, a philosophical shepherd, a Tunisian labourer and a giggling, aging countess who just needs some company constitute a good cross-section of modern French society. Varda focuses her camera on Mona during the final two months of her wanderings. She sets her tent up near a garage or cemetery and usually walks until she is completely exhausted.
