Les parapluies de Cherbourg
Jacques Demy / FR, DE, 1964 / 92 min.
This – entirely sung – romantic melodrama became a global smash. Jacques Demy's groundbreaking, bittersweet film is a visually narcotic featuring, as it does, candy cane colours and cool pastels, elegant camerawork and a beaming Catherine Deneuve. New 4K restoration.

Cherbourg, 1957. 17-year-old Geneviève Émery (Catherine Deneuve) who works at her mother’s chic, yet fading umbrella shop, has fallen in love with Guy Foucher (Nino Castelnuovo), a car mechanic. Geneviève wants to marry, but her mother thinks she is too young. While Guy fulfills his military service in Algeria, Geneviève discovers she is pregnant and her mother pressures her to pick a stable partner who appears in the guise of Roland Cassard, a wealthy diamond cutter. Geneviève is forced to decide between the two.
The film has been restored in 4K by Ciné-Tamaris in collaboration with the laboratories Éclair Classics and L.E. Diapason in Paris, under the supervision of Mathieu Demy and Rosalie Varda-Demy.
