Lulu is the iconic, mysterious seductress who ensnares everyone in her nets. Dutch filmmakers Maartje Seyferth & Victor Nieuwenhuijs' second feature, inspired by Frank Wedekind's famous play, is a dark tale of desire, betrayal and the primitive urge for survival told in a highly stylised visual language.
Wealthy publisher Leon Mortier encounters a mysterious and alluring young woman at the side of a secluded road and offers her a ride in his car. Shortly afterwards, he runs over a man. He then takes both the woman and the man to his country house, and the dance around ellusive, mysterious seductress Lulu begins...
The relationship between unpredictable Lulu and Leon soon starts to crack under the strain. Who is she? What drives her? Who is the man who suddenly appears, and who Lula introduces as her companion? In the grip of an obsesssive infatuation, Leon starts to slide into paranoia. Or is it? Leon's brother, son and friends all also soon succumb to Lulu's charms.
Lulu is Maartje Seyferth and Victor Nieuwenhuijs' vision of the famous play by Frank Wedekind, translated into a gripping, cinematic tale of love, desire and betrayal. With lead roles for Titus Muizelaar, Vlatka Simac and Hugo Metsers.
Retrospective
The release of Laatste dagen (Last Days), the latest film by independent filmmaking duo Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth, prompted Eye to dedicate a retrospective to their 40-year collaboration within production house Moskito Film. Their artistic short films, artist documentaries and often surreal, sensual, dark feature films challenge social norms and cinematic conventions.
