After Mel Gibson’s OTT production The Passion of the Christ, the equally impassioned Italian-American director Ferrara released his vision on the torments and the promise of liberation provided by Catholicism featuring Juliette Binoche, Forest Whitaker and Matthew Modine in a tale concerning an egomaniacal director (Modine) filming the life and suffering of Mary Magdalene.
Binoche plays the lead actress who, after the shoot for This Is My Blood wraps, proves so in thrall to Mary that she travels to Jerusalem to answer some existential questions. There she meets talk show host Ted Younger (Whitaker) who is shooting a series on the holy book, but becomes entrapped in his own guilt concerning his adultery.
