The golden era of Italian neorealism was effectively over by the time director Satyajit Ray made the major Indian representative of the genre, Pather Panchali. The first film in his ‘Apu trilogy’, which shines a light on everyday life on the bottom rung of Indian society, focusing on three phases in the life of the eponymous character.

Akira Kurosawa: "Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon."
