Jacques Demy’s very eccentric adaptation of a classic French fairy tale. This imaginative, colourful musical is replete with irony and bizarre scenes. Featuring Catherine Deneuve in two roles as both princess and queen.
Catherine Deneuve stars as the princess forced to disguise herself as a scullery maid to fend off unwanted marriage proposals from her own father, the king (Jean Marais). This bonkers fable about the rich becoming impoverished with songs by Michel Legrand strikes a balance between serious and satirical. Delphine Seyrig, in a wonderful supporting role the fairy godmother, sings a song about the hazards of incest. She and the princess devise a plan to help the latter escape from her lustful father: she wears a donkey skin in order to flee.
