Acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhang-ke reports on China’s transition from rigid top-down Maoism to the emergence of a form of free market economics within a collectivised, single-party state – resulting in great confusion. Screens alongside the première of Jia’s latest film, Caught by the Tides.

In 1978, Party leader Deng Xiaoping initiated a revolutionary restructuring of the despotic Communist regime he inherited from Mao Zedong, which had led to the deaths of tens of millions of Chinese people. The country was teetering on the edge of the abyss; through gradual introduction of free-market principles, Deng sought to modernise China and open the country up to foreign trade.
