Still Life
Jia Zhang-ke / CN, HK, 2006 / 111 min.
On the construction of China’s Three Gorges Dam and the effect of this on the lives of a man and a woman in search of their loved ones. Screens alongside the première of Jia’s latest feature film, Caught by the Tides, which is closely related to Still Life.

A human life is not worth much compared to economic growth, as Jia Zhangke’s documentary-like, completely surreal story of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam reveals. This megalomaniac project was instigated by the Chinese government in 1994 to cater for the insatiable demand for energy from a rapidly modernising China – the initial phase was completed in 2006.
Screening on 35mm (Eye collection).
Please note: the analogue 35mm copy of 'Still Life' has some noticeable scratches as sometimes the case with celluloid.
