Unknown Pleasures
Jia Zhang-ke / CN, JP, KR, FR, 2002 / 112 min.
Another encounter with acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. Unknown Pleasures – about drifting twenty-somethings in contemporary China – is a portrait of rapidly changing life in this one-party state – a topic Jia also examines in his latest film, Caught by the Tides.

Datong, northern China. Twenty-somethings Xiao Ji and Bin Bin while away their days in idleness until Xiao Ji falls in love with night-club dancer Qiao Qiao, and Bin Bin joins the army. It turns out that Qiao Qiao is in a relationship with a dangerous gangster, and Bin Bins’s medical inspection reveals that he is infected with hepatitis. Disillusioned, the two young men decide to rob a bank.
