Rebels of the Neon God
Tsai Ming-liang / TW, 1992 / 106 min.
In his much talked about feature film debut, Tsai Ming-liang records how the lives of two boys in Taipei intersect. One rides his scooter, the other pampers his motorcycle. The admiration, attraction, aggression and the homo-erotic undertone are unmistakeable.

Taipei, the early 1990s. The economie is booming, but it hardly seems to trigger the young. They hang around, without any goals or ambitions. Tsai's first feature film is an occasionally ironic sketch of a friendship between two boys in a metropolis. Motorbikes, video games, girls and sex are underscored by atmospheric guitar music. In Rebels of the Neon God, Ming-liang’s camera focuses on Hsiao Kang and Ah Tze: one a slacker teen who fails his exams and gets kicked out by his parents and the other an angry young criminal. One rides a scooter, the other has a motorcycle he lavishes care on.
