Sint
Dick Maas / NL, 2010 / 87 min.
Sint was Dick Maas’ return to the genre he helped invent, ‘nederhorror’ [Dutch horror]. For Maas, the Sint [Dutch Santa] (Huub Stapel) is no friend of children, but an insane bad guy come zombie who creates a bloodbath in Amsterdam.

If, to most the bringer of joy is mild-mannered bishop from (what is now) Myra in Turkey, this Sint’s primary characteristic is his having risen from the dead. Maas returns to the legend of Sint Niklas, whose gang caused death and destruction during the Middle Ages and who was burnt alive alongside his servants. Now, in 2010, when the full moon shines on 5 December, the gruesomely mutilated Niklas rises from the dead and decides to continue terrorising Amsterdam’s inhabitants.

In 2026, it will be forty years since the popular comedy Flodder shook up the film landscape. That same year, Dick Maas celebrates his 75th birthday — the perfect occasion for a look back at the work of the Dutch “king of genre,” who managed to draw millions of Dutch viewers to the cinema.
