The Invisible Frame
Cynthia Beatt / DEUZE, 2009 / 60 min.
In 1988, a young Tilda Swinton cycled along the Berlin Wall at the request of British filmmaker Cynthia Beatt who lived in the city. In 2009, the now famous actress re-traced her steps, now through a hip Berlin whilst providing poetic and political commentary.

Over the summer of 1988, a year before it came down, Beatt asked a then little known Tilda Swinton to cycle along a number of spots she had selected along the Berlin Wall as 'The Cyclist’. Swinton climbed a number of the viewing platforms, looked out over the heavily guarded emptiness between the two cities and picked flowers while the voiceover reflected on the deadly no-man’s land between East and West Berlin.

Why in Eye
In 1988, Cynthia Beatt and I made our film, Cycling the Frame, of me cycling round the perimeter of the Berlin Wall. Twenty years later, we revisit the route. A poem to Berlin, to memory and to the evolution of history.
