Alexander Mackendrick / GB, 1955 / 91 min.

Alec Guinness stars in this classic caper comedy as the leader of a gang of crooks who need a base to plan a robbery at. They rent a room in the tumbledown Victorian home of elderly landlady Mrs Wilberforce (a wonderful Katie Johnson) under the pretence of practicing there with their string quartet, even though none of them can play a note. However, the eccentric widow soon proves to be an unexpectedly formidable opponent who seriously threatens the gang’s plans; they just can’t seem to get rid of her.
