From Grain to Pixel. The Archival Life of Film in Transition by Giovanna Fossati was first published in 2009. It is now regarded worldwide as the standard work on the preservation, restoration and increasing accessibility to cinema’s legacy.

The Italian translation of the revised edition (2018) is published by Paolo Persiani, and will be presented at the Palazzo Marescotti, via Barberia 4 (Bologna), as part of the 50th anniversary of the DAMS study programme (discipline delle arti, della musica e dello spettacolo) at the University of Bologna, where Fossati started her academic career.

The English edition from 2009 was the first title in the Framing Film series – a cooperation between Eye and Amsterdam University Press. The translation of the revised edition (2018) was recently published in Argentina and is set to soon also appear in Spain.

As the chief curator, Giovanna Fossati is substantively responsible for Eye’s collection policy and its academic activities. She was appointed Professor of Film Heritage and Digital Film Culture at the University of Amsterdam in 2013. Fossati was inducted as a new member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, otherwise known as the Oscars, in July 2021.
