Why did you choose this specific film fragment?
In this fragment I immediately saw rhythm, I thought it would be interesting to investigate how that rhythm could inspire me when writing the score.
In Short Scores, Eye on Sound playfully pushes at the boundaries of film music. We asked a new generation of musicians and composers to create new mini film scores to accompany a short piece of film of their choice from Eye’s collection. Annelotte Coster chose Passage des portiques (1897).

My name is Annelotte Coster, I compose music for films (including Marlon Brando, Heartbeats, Als Je Later Groot Bent) and I'm a keyboard player.
In this fragment I immediately saw rhythm, I thought it would be interesting to investigate how that rhythm could inspire me when writing the score.
The movement in the fragment immediately appealed to my imagination. It also worked very well that I could limit myself, the melody had to match the jumps.
First, I put a midi note on each jump, so that it became clear what the rhythm would be. Then I started dividing the jumps into phrases and I looked for a suitable bpm to which the rest of the music, in combination with the fragment, fit well. I also went looking for a suitable sound palette. I thought it would be nice if there would be a mechanical element (a kind of 'running machine feeling') and a warm element (the 'humane'). This is the result!
Every three weeks, we will add a new clip accompanied by fresh new music to the Short Scores collection, which will therefore keep growing.
