Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Hi, I'm Koen a.k.a. Klangstof.
In Short Scores, Eye on Sound playfully pushes at the boundaries of film music. We asked a new generation of musicians and composers to create new mini film scores to accompany a short piece of film of their choice from Eye’s collection. Klangstof chose Feestelijk bezoek van H. M. de koningin Wilhelmina aan Rotterdam (1899).

Hi, I'm Koen a.k.a. Klangstof.
At first I thought it would be fun to give a modern twist to something very old-fashioned: the Dutch National Anthem. I noticed that the film took on a completely different charge when I pulled it to a darker side. The whole royal atmosphere suddenly felt very forced and I started to look at the film differently as a result.
I started by sampling different performances of the National Anthem. Then I cut the marching drums apart and reprogrammed them. I put the horns through a distortion module and did some crazy things with it. I've always been a fan of this way of working. Sampling things keeps the authentic vibe of the original, but at the same time gives you the freedom to add extra layers and do something new with it.
Every three weeks, we will add a new clip accompanied by fresh new music to the Short Scores collection, which will therefore keep growing.
