In a sunny lot, a man lies back on the hood of a car. He is shirtless, the tattoo on his right bicep reads 'MOM' as he cradles a small calico kitten. Next to him, facing the camera and leaning against the car, a young woman in a blue top stands with her eyes closed while she has a toothbrush raised halfway to her mouth.

The portable 16mm cameras allowed filmmakers to take to the streets and improvise. Filmmaking became much more accessible to documentary makers and artists.

Eye Filmmuseum’s Sweet 16 programme celebrates 100 years of the revolutionary 16mm film format.

We are showing spaghetti Westerns on 16mm, classics by Ed van der Elsken and Johan van der Keuken and experimental queer films by Kenneth Anger. Christopher Harris will be our Special Guest. From 21 through 27 November, we will even have rattling 16mm projectors in our cinemas – it just isn’t possible to get any closer to the beauty of the coarse grain.
