De lift
Dick Maas / NL, 1983 / 95 min.
Dick Maas only needed thirty days to shoot the greatest Dutch horror box office hit ever. De lift hinges on the power of the imagination: is service technician Felix Adelaar (Huub Stapel) paranoid or is the lift in the brand new office building really in a killing mood?

It all starts with ostensibly simple malfunctions: the lift doors stutter, floors are skipped, the power fails. Adelaar does what he can to get the recently installed lift to cooperate. However, he slowly becomes suspicious, particularly when four of the lift’s users are inexplicably found dead. People tumble down the lift shaft and the night watchman is decapitated.

In 2026, it will be forty years since the popular comedy Flodder shook up the film landscape. That same year, Dick Maas celebrates his 75th birthday — the perfect occasion for a look back at the work of the Dutch “king of genre,” who managed to draw millions of Dutch viewers to the cinema.
