American pharmaceuticals manager Walter Richmond (William Hurt) is on a business trip in Amsterdam and has brought along his wife Cathryn (Jennifer Tilly) and their 10-year-old daughter Melissa, who is mute after an accident. The latter witnesses a murder near Hotel L'Europe. The assassin starts a wild chase even accessing rock star Billy Boy Manson’s apartment at the hotel through the lift shaft.
