Eraserhead

David Lynch / US, 1976 / 89 min.

David Lynch’s cult classic about Henry, a young man who turns out to have become the father of a mutant-like creature. The young family lives in a post-apocalyptic environment, drenched in industrial noise. Grotesque, hypnotic and disturbing, this is vintage Lynch. The ‘master of weird’ would have turned 80 this month.

David Lynch's first feature film rightly deserves to be called cult. Henry Spencer, a somewhat slow, dull-looking young man with an eccentric mane of hair, is forced into marriage when he gets his girlfriend pregnant. The new family lives in a demolished building, where the newborn exerts true terror with his screams. One day, Henry's new wife has had enough; she leaves Henry alone with the monstrous baby.
