Filibus

Mario Roncoroni / IT, 1915 / 72 min.

Surprisingly progressive Italian steampunk thriller from 1915 about the feminist, gender-bending jewellery thief Filibus. Disguised as Filibus on board a zeppelin, the aerial pirate Baroness Troixmond tries to incriminate detective Hardy for her crimes.

Filibus was a renowned Italian film villain in the early 20th century, a fictional character who became an idol of the masses and avantgarde artists. ‘No other thriller is comparable to Filibus!’ screamed an Italian film ad in 1915, and the hyperbole is accurate. Filibus, directed by Mario Roncoroni and written by future science fiction author Giovanni Bertinetti, is an adventure film that borrows heavily from comic strips, science fiction and detective films. This results in a remarkably dynamic film with a fast-paced narrative replete with idiosyncratic humour.
