Nomadland
Chloé Zhao / US, 2020 / 108 min.
In her 60s, Fern (Frances McDormand) loses her job, then treks across the American west in her camper in search of a new life. Impressive portrait of a generation of Americans for whom there are no pensions.

Frances McDormand, Joel Coen’s spouse, became famous for her role as the policewoman in Fargo. Her dryly comedic persona is a perfect match for the Coen Brothers’ equally dryly depicted absurdism. That McDormand is more than a talented comedian is borne out by her role in Nomadland, Chinese-American director Chloe Zhao’s third feature film in which McDomand portrays Fern who, in her 60s, loses out in the 2008 bank crisis. All the businesses in her beloved hometown in Nevada have to close; when her husband dies, there is nothing keeping her there.
