Ingmar Bergman / SE, 1961 / 89 min.
Ingmar Bergman’s winner of the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film, records the near-disintegration of a family on holiday, while the woman is tormented by a mental affliction.
Ingmar Bergman lived on the Swedish island of Fårö for over 40 years and shot multiple films there. Bergman first visited Fårö in 1960, whilst scouting locations for Through a Glass Darkly. It was love at first sight. “I cannot imagine my life and its course without Fårö,” he said in a 2003 interview.
