Time Stands Still

Péter Gothár / HU, 1981 / 101 min.

Scintillating film about rebellious Hungarian teenagers in the 1960s exudes a bittersweet sense of aimless rebellion and constant failure. Cult film and masterpiece. 4K restoration

Hungary in the 1960s. Young people are crazy about Elvis Presley, secretly swap nude photographs, get high on Coca-Cola and cause a stir at school just like their American rebel heroes.

However, Time Stands Still also shows them having to accept the failure of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution that was brutally struck down by the Soviet Union. Some feel overwhelming guilt and the endless, futile desire of those who didn’t take part and stayed home.

To commemorate the Hungarian Revolution Eye will screen the following four restored classics, in collaboration with the Hungarian National Film Institute (Budapest) from 23 October - 11 November: Twenty Hours (Zoltán Fábri, 1965), Love (Károly Makk, 1970), Time Stands Still (Péter Gothár, 1980) and Diary For My Father and Mother (Mártá Mészáros, 1990).
