In her film version of Van Eeden’s famous novel, director Nouchka van Brakel emphasises the position of women in the patriarchy. Hedwig Marga de Fontayne (Renée Soutendijk) is beautiful, intelligent and wealthy; her lust for life brings her into contact with many men in her circles, but neither marriage nor affairs bring her happiness; thanks to a morphine addiction she ends up a prostitute in the gutter in Paris and, finally, in an institution.

In Eye, on the Eye Film Player and in national cinemas.
