Xtended: Traveling While Black (Roger Ross Williams, 2019)

Xtended

cinematographic and artistic VR

Virtual Reality productions are an increasingly important element of the contemporary film experience. Eye has created a new programme, Xtended, to focus on VR. In Xtended, you’re not confronted with the flat surface of a film screen. You move around virtually in 3D through a designed space that surrounds and immerses you on all sides.

Xtended presents work by artists and filmmakers Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Laurie Anderson, Marina Abramović and Tsai Ming-liang, who are cued by VR experience to offer alternative and challenging views of our world. Their virtual stories, visual finds and triggered experiences touch our emotions, resonate with us and make us stop and think.

Traveling While Black (Roger Ross Williams, 2019)

In Traveling While Black you are seated at a table in a restaurant listed in The Green Book, a survival guide for black travellers dating from the mid-20th century. The guide told African Americans where to find safe, friendly petrol stations, hotels, restaurants and hospitals. This VR show by Oscar winner Roger Ross Williams (Music by PrudenceLife, Animated) is part of the Eye film programme Black Light, celebrating pioneering films in black cinema. Black Light comes with a comprehensive supporting programme of events that includes music, performances and flash talks.

Traveling While Black

Re-Animated (Jakob Kudsk Steensen, 2018)
autumn 2020

The Danish artist Kudsk Steensen went to work like a digital gardener introducing plants and animals in a reconstruction of the original habitat of the Hawaiian Kaua'i'ō'ō, a bird declared extinct in 1987. The bird’s futile final mating call was recorded by an ornithologist and has since been listened to over half a million times on YouTube. Re-Animated is a stunning reanimation of the bird and its song. The VR presentation aligns with a comprehensive thematic film programme at Eye about the perceptual representation of the changing relationship between humans, nature and the climate.
